Short story: Stillness

An orange on the counter with a thumbnail indentation.

A periodical on the dining room table, open half way, smudged ink in the top right hand corner of page seven.

A curled corner of faux Persian rug in the lounge, with the dusty underside exposed.

A walking staff with a brass top and natural knotting in the wood leaning against the side of the brass umbrella stand.

A half drunk cup of coffee on the sidetable next to the phone in the hall.

Four trees in the back yard, barren of leaves with the wind howling desolately around their branches.

A cream doily on the arm of the leather lounge chair.

Sixteen lewd postcards in a shoebox at the back of a wardrobe.

A half empty tube of toothpaste in the jar on the edge of the sink.

A cardiac arrest on the floor in the hall, almost touching the front door.

This is the result of a fifteen minute writing exercise. The only constrictions were the time limit and five randomly selected words from the dictionary. Today the words were: cardiac, barren, staff, periodical, and lewd.
