Short story: Everyone's Favourite Teacher

Now Bill, you’ve just been doing an excellent job this year, excellent.

Your colleagues like you, your students like you, you just seem to have a natural affinity with teaching. Of course, you’ve been doing it for, what, thirty years? Excellent. Anyway, Bill, we’ve had some bad news. It’s a difficult time for all of us, and there’s a bit of a squeeze on from the people upstairs, if you get my drift. Yes. So I’ve been asked to approach you about maybe... taking some time off. This isn’t a dismissal, Bill. We’ve thought long and hard about it, and we’ve decided that in light of your... age, and the recent... unpleasantness, that maybe you ought to take a sabbatical. Have a change of pace, a change of scenery, maybe dabble in water colours or pottery or duck hunting... no, of course it’s not permanent, just until the girl in question... leaves. Or... sues.

Marlene? Tell Bill I’m going to need another fifteen minutes before I see him, okay?

This is the result of a fifteen minute writing exercise. The only constrictions were the time limit and five randomly selected words from the dictionary. Today the words were: squeeze, dismissal, pace, change, and dabble.
