Biography: Dave Barry

Dave Barry is a best selling and prolific American writer of both books and columns, and is probably best known for his syndicated humour columns that appeared over a 25 year period in more than 500 newspapers world wide.

Biography

Dave Barry was born in Armonk, New York, on the 3rd of July 1947. He was the son of a Presbyterian minister. He attended Pleasantville High School, where he was elected class clown in 1965, beginning an illustrious career in humour. He then attended Haverford College, from which he graduated as an English major in 1969.

After graduating, Barry got a job with the "Daily Local News" in West Chester, PA. In 1975, he joined Burger Associates, a company teaching business associates to write effectively. It was in 1983 that he took a job at the "Miami Herald", a position that was to last twenty five years and launch him as an award winning humour columnist.

In 1988 Barry won the Pulitzer Prize for commentary. He married sports writer Michelle Kaufman in 1996, and has two children, one by a previous marriage.

In 2005 Barry announced he would no longer be writing his regular column. He does, however, play lead guitar in a literary rock bank, with an illustrious line up of other members including Stephen King, Amy Tan, Ridley Pearson, and Mitch Albom.
